Representing Alberta in Ottawa and Washington
Message from Premier Ed Stelmach
Happy New Year! 2008 is set to be another busy and exciting year in Alberta. In January, I'll be representing our province in Ottawa at a meeting with the Prime Minister and Canada's Premiers, and then visiting Washington, D.C. to champion our province’s secure energy sources and food safety.
In Ottawa, I’ll reiterate the importance of Alberta's place in the global economy and its impact on every province and region in Canada. I will also have the opportunity to promote improved internal trade within Canada as a way to improve our international competitiveness, using the Alberta-British Columbia Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) as a model for the rest of the country.
While in Washington, I’ll have the opportunity to meet with U.S. government and business leaders, and participate in energy and food safety forums. I’ll emphasize that Alberta has the continued commitment and the capacity to be a secure, reliable and environmentally responsible supplier of both food and energy to the U.S.

Capital Region plans for growing economy

The Alberta government has accepted the majority of recommendations from a report on how the Capital Region’s 25 municipalities can plan together. This includes planning in key areas such as land use, roads and transit.
To jumpstart the initiative, a regional board has been created to begin building a regional plan. The board will take a long-range perspective on important infrastructure issues facing the Capital Region.

Help design Alberta’s new licence plate

Alberta's licence plate design is nearly 25 years old. With the province's growing population, in the next few years it's expected the province will run out of licence plate numbers.
This is a good time to review the licence plate and decide if a new design is needed. All Albertans are invited to have their say. Your input will help the Alberta government make decisions in the months ahead about a new licence plate for the province. The consultation will run until January 31, 2008.

Curious about this year’s new provincial laws?
In addition to legislation that bans smoking in all public places and workplaces, there are a number of other laws that came into effect on January 1.
